Artist Jim Borio

DPH asked Jim Borio to answer questions about what triggered his passion and persistence to become the talented artist he is today.

1. Where did you go to Art School?

I studied graphic design at Bucks County Community College for a few semesters.

2. What got you interested in art?

I have been fascinated with art and it is an escape from reality for me.

3. Who inspires you?

There are many people that inspire me and it continues to grow. My top two artist that inspire me would be Shepard Fairey and Banksy. They were the first two artists that got me to pursue art as a profession.

4. Do you attend Comic Cons? Do you have a favorite?

My favorite Comic Con to attend would be the Philadelphia Wizard World show just because it was my first show and ever since then I’ve been hooked!

5. Did you attend art school or educate yourself?

Jim BorioI would say with the art that I do now, I educated myself, but that’s not to say I haven’t learned some great techniques and skills from my short period at art school.

6. What is your passion?

Art in general is my passion now! I used to be a professional BMX rider and that was a huge passion of mine, but knee problems have slowed down that part of my life.

7. What concerns you most when creating art?

In art school, they teach you to be very critical about your work, and other artists work, so I’m always terrified that people are going to rip my artwork apart with their critiques.

8. What is your medium?

Mixed Media. I use spray paint and acrylic paint in most of my paintings.

9. What do you try to convey with your artwork?

There is normally a specific meaning behind my work that varies, but a common message or theme behind my work is strong independent women.

10. Do you have a story or background?

Of course, I think every artist does. I grew up in an unstable house hold so drawing and riding my bike were always my two escapes. I either fled on my bike or I would try to get lost in my artwork.

11. What do you like/dislike about the art world?

I really hate how some people think that if you’re not doing art a certain way then you are doing it wrong. There isn’t a right or wrong with art!

12. Why art?

There is art in everything that anyone does. It just so happens that I put my art onto a canvas.

13. How much of an understanding do you have about printing?

Printing has always been a huge question mark for me. For the longest time, I thought that overpriced Staples was my only option, so I tried to avoid printing all together.

14. What is your dream project?

My dream project would be to do a mural collaboration with any artist I look up to.

15. What is your goal?

I just want to be able to paint every day and keep on creating.

16. Who are your idols and who do you look up to in the art world?

My actual list of my idols would be to long so a few of them are Shepard Fairey, Banksy, Picasso, Warhol and Hush. Other real idols are anyone that loves to create and has a passion for art!

17. What is your favorite piece that you’ve created? Why is it your favorite and what does it mean to you?

I always tell myself that my next piece is going to be my favorite. I do this so I keep evolving my style until the day I know I have truly perfected it.
